One of the most common questions I hear when working with students or teachers is, “How did you do that?” There are a number of keyboard shortcuts for our Macs that you might find helpful. Here are the ones that I use most often:
Undo: Command + Z
Copy: Command + C
Cut: Command + X
Paste: Command + V
Save: Command + S
Print: Command + P
Quit: Command + Q
Send item to trash: Click one time on item, then Command + Delete
Forward delete on a laptop: Function key (fn) + Delete
Preview a document without actually opening it: Click on it one time, then press the space bar
Did you know that there are simple ways to type symbols that don’t appear on the keyboard? Here are a few that you may find helpful:
¢ (cent sign) Option + 4
÷ (division sign) Option + /
≤ (less than or equal to) Option + <
≥ (greater than or equal to) Option + >
≠ (not equal) Option + =
º (degree sign) Option + 0 (zero)
Don’t forget that the trackpad on your laptop has some great time saving gestures. The video below demonstrates ones for the newest laptops. Many of these gestures work with our older laptops, too.

Mrs. Carnevale,
Thanks for this. Despite not owning a Mac this has given me the idea to look up the keyboard shortcuts for a PC and post them in my summary of your blogs. I can think of several times in my life where have asked that question to myself when watching somebody working on a computer.
The video was also great. I now really want a Mac! The different things that the track pad is able to do is awesome and makes me jealous. Maybe one day I’ll be able to get one.
I will post my summaries of your last two blog posts by Sunday February 6th on My EDM310 Blog
Thank You,
Michael Armstrong

I get this question a lot too. Shortcuts are such life changers when you learn them!

Mrs. Carnevale,
Thank you for providing this information. I do not own a mac myself, but I understand the importance of learning shortcut keys. They make it much easier to do things on the computer and get things done faster. It was interesting learning about the different shortcut keys for the mac. If I do ever get a mac, I now know some of the shortcut keys for it. I use shortcut keys on a regular basis on my PC. I will be posting on my blog a summary of your two posts that I have seen. This will be posted up by Sunday Feb. 6th.

Hi Ms. Carnevale,
My name is Kelly Evans, I am a college student at the University of South Alabama, where I am studying Elementary Education. I am a student in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class. I was very excited to see this post on short cuts for the Mac. I am a new user to the Mac. world thanks to Dr. Strange and this class. So far I am loving it, but it is a bit different than my previous HP lap top.

Your tips are SO useful. I had my new MacBookPro for months and never got around to exploring the new trackpad. Seeing it in your blog was the motivation I needed — and WOW! was it ever worth it! Thanks for blogging!
