There’s something very special happening with two of our fourth grade classes at Wheeler Elementary School. They’re working on a collaborative writing project with other classes around the United States! Five classes are working together using a wiki to write a story, each adding a paragraph or two. This year we are fortunate to have had ten classes sign up to participate, allowing us to have two unique stories in progress. The participating classes also share information about their region on their class wiki page. This helps our Wheeler fourth graders as they study regions of our country.
Check out our WriteOn wiki project at: http://writeon2010.pbworks.com. While you’re there, be sure to check out the fabulous video on Maria Hitt’s page, look for Group One, Class One.

I truly love this idea! I think it’s very powerful. Tell me about he engagement of the kids and what is happening in the classroom. Do they look forward to ‘writing on’ and what has been the best strategy to implement this tool? Amazing!

That is VERY special, your kids are very lucky to have a teacher who is so willing to work with other schools and participate in this type of project. Well done kids and teachers, it looks amazing!

A very cool way of collaborating across the country! It sounds like the kids are excited and ready to go!

Under group one, Plainville, the Animoto video doesn’t seem to be working? What could be the problem? (I am trying to view it at school and the pop-up blocker isn’t coming on, so I’m asuming my computer is OK).

Kristen, I did a little research and it appears that it’s an issue with Firefox, both Mac and PC. I placed a link on the page to the actual Animoto video page. That should work for you.
